Guluarte Fleet was born from a deep love for the sea and a rich family tradition in San José del Cabo.

The story of Guluarte Fleet is deeply tied to the roots of our family and the waters of Los Cabos. It all began several generations ago with our grandfather Cirilo Guluarte, along with Guillermo Guluarte and the family, who lived at the San Rafael Ranch in Punta Lobos, Todos Santos. Life was built on cattle ranching, fishing, and agriculture. When fishing seasons were slow, they would beach their canoes to farm the land and raise livestock.

Fishing back then was a hard craft — done by oar and sail, mainly focused on shark fishing. The fins were highly valued, and Chinese and Japanese traders would come to buy them for export.

Between 1945 and 1960, the first Americans began arriving at the fishing port of Santa Cruz, by the famous Punta Gorda hill. Families from La Playa — including the Guluarte, González, Aripez, Castillo, Rochin, Beltrán, and others — camped, launched their pangas, and went fishing by oar and sail.

Around 1950–55, an American writer came to document the stories of this land. Guided by our grandfather Guillermo Guluarte and Don Abelino Rochin, he went fishing with the very first rods and reels. Those experiences marked the beginning of something bigger — stories were published that spread the word about the first fishermen of La Playa, drawing more visitors eager to fish in Los Cabos.

By the mid-1970s, sportfishing was booming. Americans like Guillermo joined local fishermen such as Don Eduardo Bañaga “Yayo,” Don “Falito,” my uncle “Chico” González, and my grandfather Marco Guluarte. Soon after, the first fishing cooperatives were established, and sportfishing services became a reality in our community.

During the 1970s and 1980s, sportfishing grew rapidly. The bay had more than 30 local boats, and thanks to people like Tomás Cantor, the first “Venice Anglers” tournaments were held. These later inspired the creation of the Wahoo tournaments and many more, fueling the growth of sportfishing in Los Cabos.

It was during these early tournaments that our grandfather Marco Guluarte made history, winning some of the very first Venice Anglers and Wahoo tournaments, setting the standard for competitive sportfishing in the region.

The first formal cooperatives were "San José Cooperative" and "La Playa Cooperative" (focused on commercial fishing). Later, in 1985, the "Antonio Mijares" Cooperative was created for sportfishing, with my grandfather Marco Guluarte as a proud member. That same year, my father Marco Antonio Guluarte and his brother Eduardo Guluarte took the next step, founding our own independent cooperative with its own palapa and fishing concession. Over time, they added more boats, giving birth to the family fleet that we proudly continue today.

Our family’s competitive spirit has remained strong across generations. In 1999, my father Marco Antonio Guluarte made history again by winning the very first Cabo Tuna Jackpot with a 219 lb yellowfin tuna, caught on live bait. Aboard ¨Estrella del Mar¨ 22ft.

Over the years, he also earned victories in many other local and international tournaments, including the world-famous Bisbee’s Black & Blue.

Following in his footsteps, my uncle Eduardo Guluarte and my brother Mauricio Guluarte have continued to put our family name on the map, claiming top prizes in prestigious tournaments such as the Tuna Jackpot and the Bisbee’s, proving that the Guluarte legacy is stronger than ever.

Through it all, one thing has never changed: hard work and tradition. Since the time of our great-grandparents, our family has always been known for landing giant fish — from massive black and blue marlin to trophy-size yellowfin tuna. It’s not just what we do — it’s in our blood.

In 2004, the arrival of the Puerto Los Cabos Marina required us to relocate to the docks. Since then, we have continued working from the very place where we grew up, keeping alive the passion for the sea that defines us.

Today, alongside my brothers Gabriel Guluarte, Mauricio Guluarte, and myself, Guillermo Guluarte, we proudly carry on as the fifth generation of fishermen. And the future is already here with the sixth generation, led by Marco Aarón “Chino” Guluarte, son of Mauricio.

At Guluarte Fleet, we don’t just take you fishing — we share with you a living legacy of passion, tradition, and the sea, written generation after generation in the waters of Los Cabos.
